On January 14, 2019 Virginia Senator David W. Marsden (D) proposed Senate Bill 1017 that if enacted would increase the minimum wage paid to employees to $8.00/hr. effective July 1, 2019. This proposed bill doesn’t end there but would again increase minimum wage to $9.00/hr. on July 1, 2020. Once again the minimum wage would increase to $10.10/hr. effective July 1, 2021 and finally capping out at $11.25/hr. on July 1, 2022. As this bill relates to “Tipped” employee the minimum wage would not be less than 50% of the regular minimum wage. This increase would effectively make the “Tip Credit” 50% of the regular minimum wage as well. (Example: Proposed minimum wage July 1, 2019 $8.00/hr. results in “Tipped” employee minimum wage $4.00/hr.)
